BSL-3 Lab

Overview of Services

CGIDR has a state-of-the-art M. tuberculosis (Mtb)-dedicated Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory fully equipped to ensure biocontainment and biosafety. The facility is designed with a controlled-access anteroom, negative pressure, dedicated gas lines, shower and pass-through autoclave for operator safety.  The equipment for scientific research includes ultra-low freezers, fermentor for controlled growth of M. tuberculosis, CO2 incubators, centrifuges with aerosol containment, spectrophotometer, 96-well luminometer/fluorometer, bead-beater, refrigerators, freezers, sinks, microscopes and all other equipment needed to conduct Mtb research. This facility has three individual research suites (with 8 Type II biosafety cabinets) that can be scheduled to maximize flexibility and facilitate containment. All parental strains of M. tuberculosis are already located within the BSL-3 laboratory.

The BSL-3 is operated as a Core facility on a fee per entry basis.  All  personal protective equipment (PPE) and basic lab supplies are provided, as well as service and maintenance on the equipment located in the facility.
